There are some books that have characters students immediately fall in love with. Today we are spotlighting one of them, Pig The Pug. Students can’t seem to get enough of Pig and love reading about him. Using books like this will increase you engagement because students are excited to read about their favorite character. - Jodi and the Starts With a Story Team

SUMMARY

Pig the Pug is about a dog named Pig. Pig is selfish and greedy and does not like to share. Whenever Trevor, the other dog in the house, suggested that Pig share his toys, Pig would yell at him. Pig would say that he never ever will share his toys and that they are all his.

One day, Pig loses his mind when Trevor suggests he share his toys. Pig gathers all of his toys into a pile, and stands on top them of yelling down at Trevor. He tells Trevor that now he will never have any toys and all the toys belong to him. Unfortunately, the pile of toys wobbles and Pig falls out the window. He ends up hurting his entire body and being in a full body cast. Now that he is the cast, he can’t stop Trevor from playing with the toys.

Pig learns that it would have been a lot less painful if he had just shared his toys to begin with.

USE THIS BOOK TO TEACH:

When I find a book my students love, I try to incorporate it into teaching as many skills as possible. I do this because I know they will be invested and excited about their learning. Here are some ways to engage your students using this book.

  1. Identifying the main idea is a reading skill that takes a lot of practice. It can be very challenging for students. Use Pig The Pug as an opportunity to practice this skill.
  2. Examine the cause and effect of Pig’s actions throughout the book.
  3. This is a great book for incorporating narrative writing. Students can write their own stories based off of the connections they make to the book.
  4. Practice writing book reviews! Students will be excited to share with others how much they enjoyed the book.
  5. Introduce ellipses and teach students the different ways writers use them.
  6. Practice identifying synonyms.
  7. Use Pig The Pug as an opportunity to have a class discussion on sharing and taking turns.
