SUMMARY

The Recess Queen, by Alexis O’Neill, tells the story of a young girl named Jean. She is the Queen of recess at her school. She is always the one to go first when playing games and will growl at anyone who crosses her.

One day, a new student, Katie Sue, joins Jean’s class. Not knowing the rules, Katie Sue kicks, bounces and jumps before Jean. When Jean confronts Katie, she is surprised to find that Katie Sue talks back! As Jean chases Katie around the playground, everyone is caught off guard when Katie Sue asks Jean to jump rope with her. At first, Jean is shocked and doesn't know what to do, but with some encouragement from her classmates, Jean starts to jump. From that day on, not only is Jean friends with Katie Sue, but she enjoys playing with her classmates, too!

USE THIS BOOK TO TEACH:

The best part about our Starts With a Story Book Companion is it can be used to teach so many skills! It acts as much more than a read aloud to teach reading comprehension. Teachers can integrate writing, grammar, vocabulary, and social emotional learning.

  1. Help students make connections to the events and characters in the story. Not only does this increase engagement, it helps students to better understand the book.
  2. Practice character analysis by discussing character traits, comparing characters, and inferring what others think of the main character.
  3. Use this book to kick start narrative writing in your classroom. Have students use their connections to the book to create their own story.
  4. Practice list making by asking your students to make a list of classroom rules.
  5. Teach a mini lesson on using apostrophes with examples from the text.
  6. Introduce or review action words by having students act them out.
  7. Discuss friendship and the characteristics of a good friend.
  8. Teach students the rules of the classroom and playground as you discuss making good choices with your students.
