Read alouds are a great way to help students deal with problems they might be facing, especially problems surrounding friendship. The Sandwich Swap is a great choice for teaching students how to solve conflicts with friends and accept differences.  - Jodi and the Starts With a Story Team

SUMMARY

In The Sandwich Swap, Lilly and Salma are best friends. They do everything together. They play together, draw together, swing together, and jump rope together. They even eat lunch together.

One day Lily decides to tell Salma that her sandwich is gross. Then Salma tells Lily that she thinks her sandwich is gross too. This causes a huge conflict for the girls, and soon the other students join in on the conflict. A huge food fight erupts and the girls realize they need to resolve their conflict. The girls try each other’s sandwiches and realize that they really like them! This inspires them to create a picnic where students can bring in foods from all different countries for everyone to try.

Students will learn about friendships and solving conflicts as they hear about the problems the sandwiches started.
